Tops Friendly Markets is an American retail grocery store chain with stores in the northeastern states of New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Tops stores sell a full range of products including food pantry items, health & beauty, meat & seafood, dairy, fresh produce, and more. Other services provided by Tops Friendly Markets include catering, deli, bakery, grocery pickup or delivery, and pharmacies.
Founded in Niagara Falls, New York in 1962 by second-generation grocer Armand Castellani, Tops Friendly Markets started out as a shiny supermarket and quickly became a franchise for other grocery stores. The central purchasing power of the franchise allowed the company to grow in Western New York. Throughout some acquisitions, mergers, and operational changes in the 1990s, growth continued to more than 150 locations, most of which were company-owned. By 2018, Tops had some financial difficulty that led to bankruptcy, which caused a few store closings but mostly the business remains as normal.
Tops Markets customers can find a variety of ways to save, from weekly ads to the Tops Markets Mobile App, from saving through Gas Points to getting deals in the Diaper Club. Shoppers who join the Tops BonusPlus program can get special savings opportunities and conveniences like Bonus Buys, eCoupons, Double Coupons, Buy One Get One Free (BOGO) offers and other ways to save.
November 2021 brought another change in the leadership of Tops Friendly Market as the company announced its merger with Price Chopper, with the parent company Northeast Grocery, Inc. The merger results in the ability to retain union jobs and keep the company running well even under challenging circumstances.
In line with their passion for serving their local communities, Tops Markets work hard to supply products from hundreds of different local businesses and farmers. This includes working with more than 200 different local growers to supply a host of local produce, meats, and other products.
