Hornbacher’s is a small American retail grocery store chain that operates supermarkets in the northern states of Minnesota and North Dakota. Stores sell a variety of items for the family including meats, fresh produce, wine & spirits, customized cakes, natural & organic items, deli, floral arrangements, and much more. In addition, Hornbacher’s offers services to customers such as gift card purchases, pharmacy, financial services, coffee shop, parcel pickup, and other services.
1951 saw Ted Hornbacher and a partner open a grocery store in Moorhead, Minnesota. A few years later another store was added in the Fargo, North Dakota area and the company grew over the next years. The stores were later acquired by SuperValu Inc. and then eventually sold off to Coborn’s in 2018. The owners continue to operate eight Hornbacher’s stores in the northern United States.
Hornbacher’s offers same-day grocery delivery to customers, as well as weekly ads and sales that help customers save on grocery and household items. Hornbacher’s customers can sign up online to receive weekly emails, exclusive offers, and rewards card tracking. Examples of sales from weekly ads include Buy 2 Get 3 Free on frozen pizzas, $2.69 for a gallon of milk, or apple juice for 69 cents.
Hornbacher’s is regularly involved in community impact efforts. Charity drives for 2021 include Hornbacher’s annual Cherries for Charity drive where proceeds benefit the YWCA; donations for Back to School supplies; donations to help local food banks; Root Beer Float sales in the summer to benefit United Way and a variety of other activities and events to promote the community spirit.
The Coborn Family Foundation, which is associated with the owner of Hornbacher’s stores, announced in 2021 that they would make a $1 million pledge to the Great River Children’s Museum in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the company’s founding. Other recipients of charitable giving by the company include Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Pathways for Youth, and other local charities.
