Boscov's is a family-owned department store with 48 locations in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, Maryland, Ohio, and Connecticut. They carry everything from clothing, apparel, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and bed and bath products. Their corporate headquarters are in Exeter Township, Pennsylvania, near the city of Reading, and most of their stores are in Pennsylvania. Boscov’s generates nearly $900 billion in annual sales, has around 10,000 employees, and owns 74 companies.
Bosov’s origins trace back to 1914 when Solomon Boscov, an immigrant to the U.S. from Russia, purchased eight dollars worth of goods, put them in a backpack, and started walking the Pennsylvania countryside selling them. His business blossomed and he opened his first store in 1918 in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1954, Solomon’s son and son-in-law joined the company, and their marketing efforts led to more sales and expansion starting in 1962. Today, the chairman is Jim Boscov, the grandson of Solomon Boscov, and Boscov’s has stores in eight states along the East Coast.
Boscov’s opened its latest location in Niles, Ohio, in October 2021. The shopping mall location was reported to be the largest retailer to open the entire year. Also, for the second straight year, Boscov’s plans to close its stores on Thanksgiving Day to emphasize the health and safety of the community and give its employees holiday time with their families.
Boscov’s offers free shipping on online orders of $49 or more, and a promotions page on their website titled WebDeals featuring select items at 50% off. They also offer limited-time promotions on certain brand products, such as 20% off Timex watches.
Boscov’s runs Friends Helping Friends, their annual charity fundraising event held in October that raises over $1 million for local non-profit organizations. The event is an opportunity for local non-profit organizations to raise money selling customers in-store-only $5 Shopping Passes that entitle customers to 25% off Boscov’s lowest sales prices during the event. The non-profits keep all the proceeds from selling the Shopping Passes.
