IKEA - Store

IKEA, a Swedish origin company, opened its first stores in the United States in 1985. The company sells furniture, home décor, linens, housewares, and toys with a modern, Scandinavian design. In addition to more than 50 stores in the US, IKEA also runs an e-commerce website with more than 12,000 products. Their super megastores are known for their showrooms, snack bars, restaurants, and self-service furniture warehouses, as well as kitchen/bath planning centers and design advisors.

IKEA - History

Named after the initials of its founder and the farm on which he grew up, IKEA began in 1943 in Älmhult, Sweden with the vision of creating a better life for people, no matter their budget. The founder, Ingvar Kamprad introduces affordable furniture and very quickly the company starts a catalog and looks for collaborations abroad. By 1953, they introduced a flat pack to overcome transportation issues, and the business model still relies heavily on this concept. The company now has more than 400 stores worldwide.

IKEA - Promotions

Promotions for IKEA stores can be found on their website and in-store. In particular, the company offers an IKEA Family membership card which provides special offers for members including lower prices on certain items as well as a free drink while shopping. In addition, most stores have a Last Chance and As-Is section that allows for additional discounts on clearance items.

IKEA - News

Continuing their commitment to sustainability, IKEA is increasing their action to help consumers live more ecologically sustainable lives. The company is dedicated to becoming climate positive by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in renewable energy, and inspiring its billions of customers to take climate action in their own lives.

IKEA - More Information

Keeping with its desire for sustainability,  IKEA has announced it is opening in-store hubs in Australia where they will sell their second-hand goods. In these special hubs, gently used IKEA goods will be able to be returned for a refund card and then customers can shop for pre-owned items in a more affordable manner. The idea is to keeping their products used for as long as possible, in promotion of sharing, reusing, and reducing waste.
