An American chain of specialty retail stores, The Container Store has been offering organization products, storage solutions, and custom closets for more than 40 years. The Container Store provides functional, creative, sustainable solutions displayed in shops that average approximately 25,000 square feet each and are located mostly in large metro areas. Product lines include a variety of practical, attractive storage solutions, including shelves, baskets, trash and recycling containers, toy storage, drawer organizers, spice racks, bike racks, laundry solutions, and more.
Founded in the Dallas, Texas area in 1978, The Container Store opened with the goal of helping people to simplify their lives through a new retail category: storage and organization. The company grew beyond Texas in the early 1990s and by 1999 they had acquired Elfa International, one of their main suppliers of storage and shelving units. Sold by the original owners, growth has been slower than expected, but they now run more than 90 stores throughout 33 states and the District of Columbia.
In acknowledgment of their efforts toward environmental sustainability, The Container Store recently joined up with the U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership. This means that the company commits to continuing the use of green power and renewable energy sources in its stores, distribution centers, and corporate offices. The Container Store is particularly invested in 100% renewable wind energy, due to its status as one of the cleanest power sources.
