Randalls Food Markets was founded by Robert Randall Onstead, R. C. Barclay, and Norman N. Frewin in Houston, Texas, in 1966. Later that year, they opened the first Randalls supermarket in Houston. The company grew, and by 1985, was the second-largest grocer in the Greater Houston area. In the 1990s, Randalls expanded into Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin through building and acquisition, eventually reaching 115 stores statewide. In 1999, Safeway Inc. bought the then Randalls/Tom Thumb chain, and in 2014, Cerberus Capital Management purchased Safeway and later merged it with its Albertsons chain. Today, Randall’s has around 30 stores in Houston and Austin and forms the nucleus of the current Houston division of Albertsons.
