Hays Supermarkets is a family-owned and operated company that started as a general mercantile store in 1935 in Blytheville, Arkansas. Between 1977 and 1987, the company began to expand, purchasing three supermarkets in neighboring Arkansas towns. In 1995, the two grandsons of the company's founders took over the ownership, and in May of 2001, they bought five grocery stores in several more towns, remodeled them, and opened them back up as Hays Supermarkets. Today, this family business runs 12 supermarkets in eastern and northeastern Arkansas, and each store has between 40 and 60 employees.
