Fred Meyer is a chain of hypermarket superstores found in the western United States with stores in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Alaska, and California. Fred Meyer merged with Kroger in 1998, but retained the name as part of the Kroger Corporation. Fred Meyer is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio with a regional headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
Fred Meyer began in 1951 as a store that offered groceries, a drugstore, home good and much more to customers as a one-stop shop for all his customers needs. In the 1960s, Fred Meyer acquired Marketime Drugs and a grocery wholesaler and started operating in four states. In 1973, Fred Meyer acquired Valu-Mart and opened even more stores. All the acquisitions were then acquired by the Kroger Corporation in the 1990s and 2000s but the Fred Meyer name remained.
