TO SERVE YOU FOR ALL THESE MANY YEARS ~ Bass Pro Shops: Born of Passion The inspiration for Bass Pro Shops came in 1970 when Johnny Morris fished the “All- American” National B.A.S.S. Tournament. Johnny came to believe there was an underserved demand for specialized bass fishing gear. He approached his Dad with the idea of starting a fishing shop within his Father’s Brown Derby liquor store in Springfield, MO. Though Johnny’s Dad, John A. Morris, was initially reluctant, he was his son's biggest supporter and agreed to co-sign a $10,000 loan at a local bank, Commerce. Johnny got a U-Haul, drove to a place called Okiebug in Tulsa, and spent every nickel stuffing the U-Haul trailer full. The first Bass Pro Shop opened in Johnny’s Dad’s store in 1972. He called it Bass Pro Shop because he WANTED TO DEVELOP A REPUTATION AS BEING THE BEST PLACE TO GO FOR QUALITY BASS FISHING GEAR. Over the years, Bass Pro has evolved to serve hunters, anglers, and all who love the great outdoors.
