Tom Thumb - Store

Tom Thumb is a chain of mega supermarkets in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. They offer specialty items and services and a huge selection. Their deli has a variety of made-to-order party trays, while their bakery features customizable cakes, cupcakes, and more. Indeed, it’s one-stop shopping at Tom Thumb, with custom floral services and a professional pharmacy that offers immunizations and specialty care – in addition to prescription fulfillment. And they offer a free pick-up service so that you can order your bakery, floral, deli, and more items online ahead of time. Throw in an in-store Starbucks, and you can see why Tom Thumb is the number two supermarket in the competitive Dallas/Fort Worth area behind Walmart.

Tom Thumb - History

J.R. Bost and Robert B. Cullum purchased six failed supermarkets and founded Tom Thumb in their place in 1948 as Tom Thumb Food Stores. By 1956 they had 20 stores, and over the next 16 years, they continued to expand by acquisition into the Midwest, California, and Texas. In 1987, Tom Thumb partnered with Wal-Mart to create Hypermart USA stores, but they dropped out in 1991 due to a lack of success. In 1992 the Randalls supermarket chain of Houston bought Tom Thumb, and in 1999 Safeway bought Randalls Food Markets. Safeway retained the Tom Thumb name in Dallas/Fort Worth, and by 2001, Randalls operated 69 Tom Thumb stores. In early 2015 Albertsons acquired Tom Thumb’s parent company Safeway, including its 58 Tom Thumb locations.

Tom Thumb has a partnership with Fresh Pass, a delivery service that offers unlimited deliveries all year for $99 or $12.99 a month. Fresh pass subscribers also get a $5 monthly credit, rewards that never expire, Starbucks freebies, and more. They offer a free 30-day trial for the service.

Tom Thumb - News

In late 2021, Tom Thumb started to lay off delivery drivers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as the company shifted to third-party delivery services to meet its growing online grocery business. “Our company has made the strategic decision to discontinue using our home delivery fleet of trucks in several divisions,” said Christy Lara, spokeswoman for the Tom Thumb and Albertsons supermarket chains in Dallas.
