Buehler's Fresh Foods has 13 locations in northeast Ohio in Ashland, Coshocton, Dover, Medina, New Philadelphia, Orrville, Wadsworth, Massillon, Canton, Portage Lakes, and Wooster. Buehler's offers local produce, freshly made baked goods, meats, and prepared foods. They also cater for local events, and many of their stores have family-style restaurants that serve chef-made breakfasts and lunches. The company employs 2,100 people, 39% of whom are graduates from Kent State University. A key player in the Ohio retail industry, Buehler’s has an annual revenue of $382 million.
The company was founded in 1929 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, when E.L. Buehler and his wife, Helen, opened their first store. In 1932 they moved the business to Wooster and opened a second store. The Buehler family owned the company and its 13 stores until 2017 when they sold it to employees, making the company an ESOP - employee stock ownership program.
During his induction into the Ohio Grocers Association Hall Of Fame on October 29, 2021, Buehler's Fresh Foods CEO Dan Shanahan announced that he was retiring, effective Dec. 31, 2021. He will continue in his role as board chairman and will soon announce his successor to the CEO position.
Buehler’s customers can find coupons and promos on the company’s website. In December 2020 the company gave over $740,000 in holiday bonuses to its eligible hourly and salaried employees in a show of appreciation for those that continued working hard through the COVID-19 pandemic. From September to October 2020, Buehler’s promoted the American Heart Association’s Life is Why We Give campaign at their cash registers in all 13 stores, asking customers if they wanted to contribute in support of the AHA of Stark and Wayne counties.
