Military Commissaries are a group of stores run by the US Government and placed on military bases throughout the United States and all over the world. At these outpost locations, military personnel and their dependent family members are likely to save more than 30% compared to shopping at typical grocery stores. This is especially true because Commissary stores do not charge sales tax and typically price their items just 5% above cost. Commissary stores sell groceries and household items, and customers may also shop online.
Starting out with Army officers in 1825 and then opening up to all military personnel in 1867, commissaries are certainly not a new concept. The idea was to allow military personnel access to retail goods that they needed without using civilian vendors, allowing the Army to take care of its own people. The original stores not only supplemented rations but also provided discounts and savings that helped to reinforce the military pay. What began as a list of 82 dry goods stock items in 1868 has grown to more than 12,000 line items in modern commissaries.
Commissary customers can take advantage of the Commissary Rewards Card. Shoppers can not only save by using digital manufacturer coupons but can also take advantage of other sales and promotions. Plus, from the Click2Go App, Commissary Rewards customers can shop online and have orders delivered.
Although the Pentagon had recently proposed that the Commissary Agency should be merged with the separate exchange systems for the three branches (Army, Navy, Airforce), that plan has been abandoned. While it was originally thought that the merger could save billions of dollars, it turns it out would cost at least an additional $1.5 billion to the Defense Department, so the stores will remain as they are.
When the military commissary puts on its special case lot sales, shoppers can save up to 50% or more during these special sales. It’s a great way to rack up additional discounts on needed products.
