Michael J. Dupey founded Michaels Stores in 1973 in Dallas, Texas. Over the next thirty years, the company grew by acquisition and building from scratch, opening craft and hobby stores in new local and regional markets. In the fall of 2008, Michaels Stores opened its 1,000th store. In May 2007, Martha Stewart and Michaels launched "Martha Stewart Crafts," an online resource for home "do-it-yourselfers" with how-to instructions, projects, and crafting products. Michaels has been a publicly-traded and private company more than once. As of January 2021, its publicly traded, with 1,252 stores in 49 U.S. states and Canada, over 45,000 employees, and over $5 billion in sales for the fiscal year 2020.
