Smart and Final - History

Smart and Final’s history can be traced back to 1871 Los Angeles to current day. When Los Angeles was little more than a small dusty town of ranchers, Herman Hellman, Jacob Haas, and Bernard Cohn launched a new grocery business as the Hellan-Haas Grocery Co to sell the necessities of the day including gunpowder and sheepherding supplies. Supplies were in bulk and sold by weight. Bought out in 1889, the company found huge success by selling a line of canned tomatoes among other products. As times changed, Smart and Final stayed in business by pioneering the cash and carry concept with better service.
