Lucky Supermarkets is an American grocery store chain owned by Save Mart Co. based in Dublin, California. Like Save Mart's other supermarket divisions, Lucky is a full-service supermarket that provides an array of locally-sourced products across their deli, meat, bakery, frozen, produce, and all-new lifestyle departments.
Charles Crouch founded Lucky Stores as Peninsula Stores Limited in 1931 with the acquisition of Piggly Wiggly stores in Burlingame, San Mateo, Redwood City, Palo Alto, and San Jose. By 1935, the company had seven more stores, and in the next few decades, grew by acquisition in Seattle, Washington, Southern California, Florida, and Illinois. In 1998, Albertsons bought out American Stores, which owned Lucky Stores at the time. Over the next year, all Lucky Stores took the Albertsons name, and the Lucky brand was phased out -- except for one store in Livermore, California. In November 2006, Save Mart Companies acquired the Northern California division of Albertsons, which included the right to use the Lucky brand in the areas Albertsons operated. As of 2016, Save Mart had over $4 billion in annual revenue and 16,000 employees. Today, Lucky's has over 60 locations, all in California.
