Kmart - Store

A big-box, discount department store chain, Kmart is known for its low prices on various household items, clothing, footwear, tools, garden products, health & beauty, food and more. At its peak in the 1990s, the company had more than 2000 stores, including a number of Big Kmart and Super Kmart locations. Some of Kmart’s more popular lines in the 1990s and 2000s were Martha Stewart Living, Jaclyn Smith, Kathy Ireland, Lauren Hutton and more. They also have sold licensed brands such as Disney and Sesame Street.

Kmart - History

The first store with the name Kmart was opened in Detroit, Michigan in 1962. It was founded by the Kresge Corporation and became an important fixture in many American towns through the second half of the 20th century. It opened more than two thousand stores in the United States, Canada and Europe over the next 20 years, until the success started taking a downward turn due to outdated marketing and decaying facilities.

Kmart - Promotions

Kmart regularly offers various discounts and deals in their weekly ads, such as 30% off washers and dryers or 40% off power tools. Customers who sign up for email notifications can receive $5 off a purchase of $50 or more. And those who qualify for Kmart’s Shop Your Way credit card can get 1-5% in points and rewards on everyday purchases.

Kmart - News

The company recently announced that the last remaining Kmart in California will close before Christmas. Over the years, store closings, bankruptcy filings and a merger with Sears have not been able to restore the company to its former glory. Kmart now has only a little more than a dozen stores that will remain open until the end of 2021.

Kmart - More Information

The original Blue Light Special, a well-remembered fixture at Kmart, began in 1965 and was used to draw attention to specific products that were on sale for a limited amount of time. The rotating blue light was similar to those on a police car and it eventually became a pop culture reference used in conjunction with the phrase, “Attention, Kmart shoppers”.
