Carrs-Safeway is an American retail chain of supermarkets located in the state of Alaska. There are now at least 24 stores throughout various cities and towns in Alaska, mostly located in Anchorage. Carrs provides its customers with various family needs such as pantry items, fresh produce, meats, household cleaning products, baked goods, and much more. Services at Carrs stores include pharmacy, grocery delivery, curbside pickup, gift cards, prepaid cards, and much more.
After moving to Anchorage Alaska, Larry Carr decided to open a grocery store with his brother and father in 1950. The name of the first store in Quonset hut was Carrs. A partnership with Bernard Gottstein began in 1960 and a second store was opened in 1966. For some years the name changed to Carrs Quality Centers, and several stores were opened throughout south-central Alaska as the area grew over the next decade. 1999 saw Safeway acquire the company but retained the use of the Carrs portion of the name, due to a significant amount of customer loyalty.
Carrs offers a host of discounts and deals in its weekly ads. Plus, customers can join Carrs For U, a perks club supplying rewards and deals, such as the fuel points program and an introductory $5 off one $25 purchase. Customers who prefer to order from Carrs-Safeway online can choose an annual FreshPass subscription that allows for unlimited free delivery as well as a $5 monthly credit. Three different Apps can be downloaded to make Carrs more convenient for shoppers.
Last year, to provide support and encouragement for education, Carrs-Safeway offered $200,000 in the form of grants of $5000 to 40 different Alaskan public school teachers. The funds are channeled through the teachers directly into the classrooms to meet needs such as improving learning spaces, updating computer equipment, buying books, covering field trip expenses, and many other ways that school children can be better supported in their learning process.
Carrs-Safeway Foundation, Nourishing Neighbors, is helping to feed families who have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Whether through job disruptions, school closures, or health challenges, the foundation helps school children to receive breakfasts and lunches, aids seniors who cannot leave their homes for food, raises funds for local food banks and meets other needs.
