H-Mart is the largest Asian supermarket chain in the U.S. and a pioneer of Asian food in America. Over the course of its 39 years, the chain has grown to include more than 97 stores across the United States. The stores offer a vast array of Asian foods and a broad range of Western groceries. In addition to being America’s premier Asian food destination, HMart provides everyday essential and upscale products. And, H-Marts have pharmacies, beauty and skincare product outlets, kids’ play areas, and food halls (small cafeteria-style eateries).
The chain was founded in 1982 in Woodside, Queens, New York City, as a corner Korean grocery store. In the early 1990s, it started growing rapidly, adding 10 stores in as many years. In the 2000s, the chain expanded into the South and the West, opening their first H-Mart in Duluth, Georgia, and two stores in Colorado. By March 2006, HMart had 22 locations ranging from New York City to Federal Way, Washington State. The chain hit $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time in 2014 and has exceeded $1 billion in sales every year since.
