IGA - Store

IGA is an American chain of grocery stores that operates in more than 30 countries, but unlike most chain store models, IGA operates as a franchise. These stores are owned separately from the brand.

IGA - History

IGA was started in May of 1926 when a group of 100 independent retailers led by J. Frank Grimes organized themselves into a single marketing system to have access to a consistent supply chain. A few years after forming, the company began producing its own canned food brand that is still sold today. In the first four years, the IGA system expanded from 100 retailers to over 8,000 grocery stores under the IGA heading. Many are still in small towns and run by families.

IGA - Promotions

IGA produces weekly flyers in paper and digital options for most stores. Since IGA stores are independently owned, each may have deals on different types and qualities of foods for the area. Customers can sign in online and create a digital list for their stores. Pick-up and delivery options will depend on the stores and area.

IGA - News

Many IGA stores are focused on going green not only for the environment, but to save money. This means that using energy efficient lighting and refrigeration in an IGA store and making sure walk-in coolers stay closed is not only good for the environment, but can increase profit margins. IGA wants to help not only communities, but Mother Earth.

IGA - More Information

Since each IGA store is independently owned, donations and fundraising options vary, but many focus on child and youth mental health, childhood cancer, and culinary training for young adults. Each store chooses how to best support their community and form a partnership with customers.
