Food Depot is a U.S. supermarket chain based in the state of Georgia. They feature a large meat department with an array of fresh beef, pork, seafood, and poultry. Food Depot’s concept of selling items just above cost is not a new one, but they have continued operating within this business model long after most companies abandoned it. The long-time owners, Gerald Taylor and Raymond Johnson, consider themselves the caretakers of the company, making sure it stays true to its values to provide high-quality food at bargain pricing, take care of its employees, and grow profitably. Food Depot has 42 stores and around 1,500 employees.
The company was founded in March 1975, when Gerald Taylor and Raymond Johnson purchased their first supermarket in Stockbridge, Georgia. Most of their friends thought they were crazy because they had mortgaged their homes to help pay for the store. They opened the first Food Depot store more than a decade later in 1988. Today, the grocery store chain has annual revenue in the tens of millions of dollars, and dozens of stores all over Georgia -- with plans to open more.
Food Depot has online shopping and curbside pickup but no delivery. They offer temporary value promotions on purchases of several or more of a product, and temporary special promotions on select products, such as a $20 gift card when you purchase a certain number of Unilever products. The store also runs a location-specific weekly ad, and customers can view the products on sale for the store closest to them by clicking on the weekly ad button near the top of their main page.
In 2019 Food Depot announced it had plans to open stores outside of Georgia soon. In April 2021 Food Depot announced on its Facebook page that it would be offering online pickup at their Douglasville and Dublin stores.
In October 2020, the roof of a storage room in a Food Depot in Dekalb County, Georgia, collapsed, injuring one woman.
