Haggen is an American retail chain of grocery stores that operate in the state of Washington. Haggen stores sell a variety of supermarket products, including meat & seafood, pantry items, dairy, deli, fresh produce, and more. Departments at Haggen include a deli, bakery, floral & garden, health & beauty, fresh seafood, and others. They also provide health services in their stores, such as pharmacies and in-store vaccination appointments.
In 1933, Dorothy and Ben Haggen opened a small grocery store in Bellingham, Washington, with their business partner, Doug Clark. Originally named Economy Food Store, which was apt during the Great Depression, a few years later a new location eventually brought a new name: The White House Grocery. By 1947, they had moved again and settled on the name Haggen’s Thriftway, where that location still operates today. Growth beyond Bellingham happened in the next decades and the company moved into the superstore arena in the late 1970s. The store was eventually bought out by Albertson’s and now 15 sores have retained the Haggen name.
Weekly flyer specials and deals change regularly at Haggen, with examples of deals including saving up to $11 each when purchasing 4 bottles of wine, saving up to $2.20 each on Free Range Grade A Large Eggs, or getting Hass avocados at 2/$3. In-store coupons are another way to save at Haggen’s Food & Pharmacy centers.
With a bent toward community giving, Haggen works to partner with local non-profit organizations through donations as well as in-store engagements. The Community Giving Program for 2021 offers fun events such as a Kids Cooking Club, Community Days, Youth & Education projects, Community Wellness events, Holiday Toy Drives, Fight against Hunger, and much more.
Its proximity to Seattle meant that Haggen’s grocery store became the first one of its kind to house a Starbucks coffee shop inside, which happened in 1989. Since then, this trend has continued and Starbucks has entered into many grocery stores all over the United States.
