Foods Co is a U.S. regional supermarket chain based in Compton, California. The Kroger Co. owns and runs many Foods Co stores, and the rest are locally-owned franchises. The chain is called Foods Co in California due to a naming rights issue. In states other than California, it’s called Food 4 Less. The stores purchase foodstuffs directly from manufacturers and offer customers a nothing-fancy, warehouse-like shopping experience, with self-grocery bagging at checkout. Foods Co has 20 stores in three states, around 200 employees, and annual revenue of around $30 million.
Lou Falley came up with the Foods Co name, logo, and concept in the 1930s, but the Foods Co chain wasn’t officially founded until 1977. For decades, the chain didn’t open stores beyond eastern Kansas and parts of northwestern Missouri. Then Foods Co eventually merged with Ralphs in the mid-1990s, then Fred Meyer acquired Ralph’s in 1997, and only a year after that, Kroger Ralphs. In 1998 Fred Meyer sold the Kansas and Missouri Foods Co stores and later opened new stores in Illinois, Indiana, and California. Though Foods Co changed ownership several times through the years, the stores retained their core identity: “no-frills” stores offering very low prices.
Foods Co has a coupon page on its website, and customers can sign into their Foods Co accounts and digitally “snip” coupons and save them to redeem later when they swipe their cards in-store. The chain also offers grocery delivery in as little as 30 minutes (depending on what and how much is ordered) and features promo codes for delivery discounts on their website.
In April 2021 The Kroger Co., Foods Co.’s parent company, announced it was expanding its Simple Truth® Recycling Program, offering customers a free and easy way to recycle flexible plastic packaging. The more expanded recycling program advances the retailer's Zero Hunger Zero Waste social and environmental impact plan.
Kroger, Food Co’s parent company, is committed to helping their local communities through various charitable grants and partnerships. Supporting America’s military veterans is near the top of their list, as evidenced by the 45,000 veterans they’ve hired since 2009 and their partnerships with organizations that support veterans. Recently, the company announced that in cooperation with Warrior Homesteads, an organization that builds and donates homes for veterans, they would donate $500 to help stock the recipient veterans’ pantries and fridges.
