Memorial Day was established in the United States 1868 as a day to remember the sacrifices of soldiers. Originally, this day was meant to honor soldiers from the Civil War who gave their lives fighting for their country. As time has passed, it has come to be a time to recognize and remember the sacrifice of all members of the American military and armed forces who are no longer living.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in the month of May. The date changes but this holiday is always celebrated on a Monday, making an extra day for celebrating over the holiday weekend. Many people consider Memorial Day weekend to be the launch time for summer.

On Memorial Day, some people will go to visit a cemetery where soldiers or those who served in the armed forces have been buried, taking flowers to lay on the grave. Government offices, schools and many businesses are closed in honor of Memorial Day.
For people in modern times, however, Memorial Day is simply a time to take a day off of work and enjoy time with their family and friends. Often considered to be the beginning of the summer season and warm weather, many families will host Memorial Day parties, picnics or barbecues.
