Christmas Tree Shops

Even though the name might imply its only for a certain holiday, Christmas Tree Shops is a discount retailer focusing on household furnishings, toys, health & beauty, and food items that feature all year round. It is a liquidation store, which means that it acquires products that haven’t sold in other places and then resells it at lower prices. The shops are filled with discounted goods such as tableware, holiday décor, bedding, pet items, gifts, garden furniture and much more.

With its first location in Massachusetts in the 1950s, the store was originally called The Christmas Tree Gift Shop. Under new ownership in the 1970s, it expanded into three different buildings in the one location, offering unique items for low prices. The store eventually grew beyond offering only holiday goods, but the name stuck as they grew to other locations. By 2003, the company was bought out by Bed, Bath & Beyond and then, in 2020, the company changed hands again.

On the Christmas Tree Shops website, the company offers a discount coupon of $10 (off a $50 purchase) when signing up for their email list. In addition, the stores also have special promotions and discounts in their weekly ad flyer (available online), with deals such as Buy One Get One Free or 3 items for $2.

After being bought by a new owner in 2020, Christmas Tree Shops has gone through a small transformation with their new company, Handil Holdings. After Bed, Bath & Beyond sold the stores for cash to stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, the inventory integrity and loss prevention systems have been boosted to make the company more viable for the future.

In a nod to their original location in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, many of the stores are designed with a facade of quaint, older buildings with awnings or Victorian turrets. This is especially true of the freestanding stores in the New England area, whereas the strip mall stores in other regions are not as uniquely designed.
