BJ’s or BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings is a leading U.S. membership-only warehouse club chain headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts. They offer 25% or more average savings compared to typical supermarkets on bulk packaged, brand-name groceries. They carry a wide variety of perishable products and general merchandise and have auto garages for tire services and gas pumps.. BJ’s operates along the East Coast and Ohio and Michigan, with plans to expand into Indiana. Their revenue was $13 billion in 2019 and as of summer 2020, they operate 216 BJ's clubs in 17 states and employ around 25,000 people.
Founded in 1984, the company’s name ‘BJ’s’ comes from the initials of Beverly Jean Weich, the daughter of the president of Zayre. Zayre is the parent company of BJ’s that changed its name to TJX companies. In 1989, TJX Companies created their warehouse division Waban, Inc., and launched BJ’s. BJ’s then split off in 1997 and became an independent, publicly-traded company, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. In 2011 two private equity firms bought the company and closed five stores in a bid to increase the company’s stock value. In 2019 BJ’s went public again and expanded into Michigan.
In August 2021 BJ’s reported strong second-quarter fiscal numbers, with a 5.6% increase in net sales as well as growth in the size and quality of its club memberships. In October 2021 the company announced it had hired Rachael Vegas Company as Executive Vice President, Chief Merchandising Officer heading the strategic leadership of the Company’s merchandising and assortment planning and allocation functions.
BJ’s offers three types of memberships. The first is the Inner Circle membership for in-store and online purchases. It offers exclusive BJ's membership coupons, complimentary membership for a family member, and three add-on memberships for $30 each. The second is Perks Rewards membership which has all Inner Circle benefits plus 2% cashback on most purchases, double or triple cashback during special events throughout the year, and BJ’s travel benefits. The third is Business Save membership for in-store and online business purchases. It offers tax-exempt and resale privileges and up to eight additional memberships at a discounted rate. BJ’s also has a coupon page on their website with temporary discounts on select products members can “clip” electronically by signing into their accounts.
BJ’s is committed to fighting hunger. In October 2021 the company pledged a $1 million donation from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation to Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. The donation is just one of the company’s grants to 50 Feeding America member food banks in the Eastern United States to support child and family food assistance programs.
