Carter’s, Inc. is a U.S.-based designer, manufacturer, seller, and marketer of clothing, shoes, and related products for babies and young children in the United States and Canada. The Company owns two of the biggest brands in this market -- Carter’s and OshKosh B’gosh brands. They have over 600 Carter’s-owned stores in the U.S. and Canada, nearly 21,000 employees, and $3.5 billion in annual revenue. Carter’s brands are also sold in leading chains, department stores, and specialty retailers in the U.S. and abroad.
William Carter founded the William Carter Company as a clothing company for adults and children in 1865 in Needham, Massachusetts, and originally ran it out of his home. By the early 1960s, the company had manufacturing operations at seven mills and gradually expanded to eight manufacturing mills. The Carter family sold it in 1990 to a corporation in Georgia, which rebranded it as a children’s apparel business. The company was successful and grew, acquiring competitor OshKosh B'gosh for $312 million in 2005. As of 2020, it has a 23% share of the 0-2 years old apparel market.
