Haggen - Store

Haggen is an American retail chain of grocery stores that operate in the state of Washington. Haggen stores sell a variety of supermarket products, including meat & seafood, pantry items, dairy, deli, fresh produce, and more. Departments at Haggen include a deli, bakery, floral & garden, health & beauty, fresh seafood, and others. They also provide health services in their stores, such as pharmacies and in-store vaccination appointments.

Haggen - History

In 1933, Dorothy and Ben Haggen opened a small grocery store in Bellingham, Washington, with their business partner, Doug Clark. Originally named Economy Food Store, which was apt during the Great Depression, a few years later a new location eventually brought a new name: The White House Grocery. By 1947, they had moved again and settled on the name Haggen’s Thriftway, where that location still operates today. Growth beyond Bellingham happened in the next decades and the company moved into the superstore arena in the late 1970s. The store was eventually bought out by Albertson’s and now 15 sores have retained the Haggen name.

Haggen - More Information

Its proximity to Seattle meant that Haggen’s grocery store became the first one of its kind to house a Starbucks coffee shop inside, which happened in 1989. Since then, this trend has continued and Starbucks has entered into many grocery stores all over the United States.
