Michael J. Dupey founded Michaels Stores in 1973 in Dallas, Texas. Over the next thirty years, the company grew by acquisition and building from scratch, opening craft and hobby stores in new local and regional markets. In the fall of 2008, Michaels Stores opened its 1,000th store. In May 2007, Martha Stewart and Michaels launched "Martha Stewart Crafts," an online resource for home "do-it-yourselfers" with how-to instructions, projects, and crafting products. Michaels has been a publicly-traded and private company more than once. As of January 2021, its publicly traded, with 1,252 stores in 49 U.S. states and Canada, over 45,000 employees, and over $5 billion in sales for the fiscal year 2020.
Michaels offers free shipping on all orders over $49 to the lower 48 states. Same-day delivery is available at select stores on orders to addresses within a 10-mile radius of the store. Second-day and next-day options are available in the lower 48 states, and curbside and in-store pickup are free. Michaels prints a weekly ad which is also viewable on their website with deals you can grab by signing into your Michaels account and clipping and saving them. The store has special online coupons and promo codes on its website.
In August 2021, Michaels announced it would hire over 20,000 seasonal positions across its U.S. and Canada stores and distribution centers in preparation for the 2021 holiday season. In March 2021, Michaels announced its partnership with Instacart, the leading online grocery delivery platform in North America, to launch a pilot program to deliver from nearly 100 Michaels stores across Chicago, Dallas, and Washington D.C.
Michaels partners with charitable organizations to cultivate creativity in their communities. They partner with The Boys and Girls Clubs of America to bring creative exploration and development opportunities by donating supplies and supporting skill-building for The Boys and Girls Clubs employees.
