Gander Outdoors, now also branded ‘Gander RV’ is an online and brick-and-mortar retailer of outdoor supplies for those who pursue camping, boating, RVing, fishing, hunting and many other outdoor activities. The store sells a wide range of equipment and supplies such as apparel, shoes, auto accessories, fishing lures, camping furniture, kayaks, backpacks and a variety of other items. Most Gander RV stores (at least 40) now also offer RV sales as well as service for RVs.
Starting out as a small retailer in Wisconsin in 1960, Gander Mountain was founded by Robert Sturgis who was an avid outdoorsman. The company was named after the location, Gander Mountain, in Wisconsin. A chain of stores was opened but struggled throughout the 1980s. After filing reorganization bankruptcy a couple of times, the chain of stores was finally sold to Camping World, who has since closed most of the retail stores or converted them to ‘Gander RV’ stores. The stores online presence continues as ‘Gander Outdoors’.
Gander Outdoors customers who sign up with their email address online can access 10% off list of exclusive products. Members of Good Sam, the RV club program, receive special shipping discounts for online orders purchased through Gander RV.
2020 saw Gander Outdoors taking over the branding sponsorship from its parent company Camping World, becoming the title sponsor for NACAR’s Truck Series. This continued into early 2021, although it is expected that Camping World will recoup its own title eventually.
Parent company of Gander Outdoors, Camping World, is also the owner of Good Sam. Good Sam is a club for RV owners to stay connected, get discounts on camping spots, sign up for Roadside Assistance, and gain exclusive access to the Good Sam Rewards credit card. Members who sign up can get special deals on Gander RV products and services.
