Chanatry's Hometown Market is an independent, local grocery store committed to quality foods and personal service based in New York. Since 1912, the Chanatry family has strived to provide a local and personalized grocery shopping experience their customers don’t have at big chains and retailers. They deliver this experience with a friendly staff, fresh fruits and vegetables, quality meat, and from-scratch bakery items baked fresh every day. The store has one location in Utica, New York.
The supermarket was founded as Chanatry Bros. in 1912. Having escaped to the U.S. from the Ottoman Empire, the three Chanatry brothers endeavored to make their living selling pita bread from pushcarts at a Bleecker Street storefront in New York City. The locals loved their offerings, and in 1938 the brothers opened a 6,000-square-foot store on the same street. When World War II started a few years later, they were running Utica’s busiest supermarket. Now 80 years later, the Chanatry family has been running Chanatry’s Market for three generations.
Chanatry’s prints a weekly ad featuring coupons and deals on select items all year long that customers can get in local publications or from the company’s website. Chanatry’s also runs sweepstakes contests from time to time with prizes like folding indoor cycling bikes and store gift cards.
In March 2020 during the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chanatry's Hometown Market took action to promote the health and safety of their communities by opening early every morning to allow seniors to shop for 90 minutes without other customers in the store.
Chanatry's is committed to supporting its local Utica and Mohawk Valley communities through supporting local schools and houses of worship, paying local taxes, and contributing to local charities. Chanatry’s owners are fond of saying, "At Chanatry's your dollar goes the farthest, but still stays at home."
