Randalls is an American supermarket chain that operates 32 stores in Texas under the Randalls and Flagship Randalls banners. Randall’s stores have fresh produce, deli, fresh meat and seafood, bakery, floral, and cosmetic departments. The Flagship Randalls stores have added fresh-made pizzas, pastas, and barbecue to their take-out order menus. Randalls Food Markets was founded by Robert Randall Onstead, R. C. Barclay, and Norman N. Frewin in Houston, Texas, in 1966. Later that year, they opened the first Randalls supermarket in Houston. The company grew, and by 1985, was the second-largest grocer in the Greater Houston area. In the 1990s, Randalls expanded into Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin through building and acquisition, eventually reaching 115 stores statewide. In 1999, Safeway Inc. bought the then Randalls/Tom Thumb chain, and in 2014, Cerberus Capital Management purchased Safeway and later merged it with its Albertsons chain. Today, Randall’s has around 30 stores in Houston and Austin and forms the nucleus of the current Houston division of Albertsons.
Randalls offers a yearly discount membership called Fresh Pass. For $99 a year or $12.99 a month, members receive free unlimited delivery on orders over $30, $5 monthly credit, 5% off select products, indefinite expansion of rewards, VIP customer service phone line, and more. Randalls’ weekly ad is viewable online and you can sign in and save coupons to your store account to use online or in stores.
Randalls closed one of its Austin locations in November 2021, because the store had reached the end of its lease term, and the landowner had plans to redevelop the property. Randall’s said it’s looking at multiple sites in and around Austin for potential new stores.
Randalls is committed to helping people in their local communities through fundraising and supporting nonprofits. They created a fund for local food banks through which customers can donate to support families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic school closures, job disruptions, and the disproportionate impact on the elderly and low-income families.
