Foodland - Store

Foodland is an American retail chain of supermarket stores located on the islands of Hawaii. The stores provide customers with a variety of products in various categories, including fresh fruits & vegetables, bread & baked goods, dairy, deli, health & beauty, frozen foods and pantry items. Plus, the stores also offer services including catering items made by in-house chefs.

Foodland - History

When Irish-born Maurice Sullivan was serving in the US military during World War II, he was sent to Hawaii where he met a local family who operated a store. After the war, he returned to Hawaii and worked there until, in 1948, Sullivan and the Lau family opened the first modern supermarket in Hawaii with great success. Originally called Market City, the company grew to 32 stores and, in 1995, Sullivan’s daughter took over as president of Foodland.

Foodland - Promotions

Foodland customers earn points that can be redeemed for free groceries, products and travel, as well as receiving instant savings every day using the Maika’i card (Maika’i means “good” in Hawaiian). In addition, customers of Foodland have access to weekly specials in a variety of categories.

Foodland - News

Sadly, in late 2021, Foodland had to close one of its locations (doing business under the name Sack N Save) in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. As with many businesses, the store took a downturn in recent years and has not been able to sustain its place.

Foodland is connected to the community it serves and the company has been giving back since it was founded in 1948. The company has various community programs including helping with food banks, awarding college scholarships, and promoting the sharing of a holiday feast with families in need.
